About this site
An independent learning resource about carnivorous plants, written to be checked rather than believed.
Purpose
Carnivorous Roots exists to help people identify a carnivorous plant, understand what it needs and solve the problems that come up when growing one: a species library with structured care summaries, a short beginner path, practical articles and an open growing journal.
The site does not sell plants and has no accounts, comments or newsletter.
How to read the pages
- Sources are listed. Every entry ends with the botanical and horticultural references behind it, so you can check any claim for yourself.
- Difficulty ratings are a judgement. They describe typical home conditions and are explained on each species page. Your conditions may make a plant easier or harder.
- Examples are labelled. Demonstration content, including experiment protocols that have never been run, carries an "Example" label on every card and page. No example contains invented results.
About the experiments
The growing journal records small comparisons: one variable, a stated question, a method, dated observations and a frank list of limitations. These are hobbyist trials in a home setting, not controlled science. They are published so that others can see the method and the data, not because the results generalise. Planned experiments say plainly that no results exist yet.
Corrections
If you find an error, a misidentified photograph or an unsupported claim, the entry's sources list is the place to start checking.
Credits
The site is built with Astro on the open-source Yoga Fitness theme (MIT licence), adapted for this subject. Photographs are used under their stated licences; each is credited on the photo credits page and, where shown, beneath the image.
New to carnivorous plants?
The beginner path explains choosing a plant, water and media, light and dormancy in four short lessons. The plant group pages introduce each genus, and the species library covers each plant in detail.
